Wine of the Week: Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils
Cuvee Girard 2019 Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Sale Price Through Feb. – $43.99
Normally – $54.99
Domaine Raymond Usseglio is considered one of the top producers within the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Raymond himself has been ceding control to his son Stéphane as the natural transition of a generational wine estate.
Cuvée Girard is made up primarily of Grenache, but is differentiated from other cuvées by having Mourvedre as its second most prominent grape (followed by Syrah, Cinsault, and Counoise). And let us not forget the vines which average an age of 80 or so years.
The wine sets itself apart from other Châteauneuf by having remarkable elegance despite it’s 14.5-ish alcohol and fine tannins that indicate long aging potential. Red fruits lead the charge in this bottling, with light floral notes of tropical citrus. This wine could certainly be enjoyed now, or any time over the next decade or so.
